A bunch of sickies

We seem to have the sickies at our house.  First The Girlchick came home from school very hoarse sounding.  She didn't complain about feeling bad or her throat hurting, she just sound bad.

Well last week Thing 1 started running a low grade fever that we attributed to his teething.  Well on Friday that fever spiked to 102.8.  We took him in and we saw a doctor that was not our usual doctor and she told us that he had a double ear infection.  I even questioned her about it since this was not his normal MO for an ear infection.  I was so focused on that that I didn't realize until later that she didn't even look at his throat and mouth.  Needless to say it was a very rough Friday night followed by an even tougher Saturday.  We were all tired and cranky and we were having a very rough time controlling his fever, putting him in a cool tub, alternating between the ibuprofen and Tylenol, nothing seemed to be working.  Finally Saturday evening it came down to 101 and we were so happy and he seemed so much more comfortable.

But on Sunday it seemed to be Thing 2's turn.  He started to get a low fever on Sunday evening so we kept an eye on him.  On Monday morning it was still low, but he didn't sleep well the night before.  I decided to go ahead and make an appointment with his doctor for late in the day just in case.  Man am I glad I did!  His fever got up to 102.8 and again we were having issues controlling it.  I took him in and she looked him over and looked in his throat and there were little blisters all over it.  Ends up being a virus that is a cousin to hand/foot and mouth (not to be confused with foot and mouth which is a virus that effects cows).  With this new diagnosis and I am really doubting that Thing 1 actually had an ear infection and that we needed to put him on antibiotics. Humph.

What I think happened is The Girlchick had some virus that she passed on to the boys and it manifested a little differently in them than it did her.  But I don't have MD after my name, so that is just my personal opinion.

It is funny the difference between the boys and how they act when they are sick.  Thing 1 is very high maintenance, very clingy, very fussy, every little thing you do makes him cry, he won't eat, and it's hard to get him to drink and he just cries all the time - he very rarely stops.  Thing 2 is much more like The Girlchick when she was a baby and sick.  Sometimes you didn't even know she was sick.  She just went on with her day.  She just went with the flow.  Thing 2 is like that, his mouth hurts, and you can tell it hurts him bad, but it doesn't stop him from at least trying to eat or drink, he still sleeps pretty well, he will get clingy, but he has to be feeling really bad, he will still play and laugh - not Thing 1, he doesn't want to be messed with or looked at or anything.  When the Dr. did the flu swab for Thing 1 he continued to scream until we got home and he passed out and went to sleep, Thing 2 cried but calmed down and even perked up a bit once the ibuprofen kicked in.

Cars go vroom vroom

It's very interesting what toys the boys really like and play with all of the time.  For Thing 2, he has lots of interests, not one particular toy that he plays with all of the time.  He will bounce from toy to toy not really playing with anything for very long.

Thing 1 on the other hand - loves playing with cars.  Lego makes a little car set with a ramp that is the perfect size for their little hands.  He will sit there for an hour and play with the car on the ramp.  He will then take the car and "drive" it along the couch making vroom vroom sounds.  Well we make the vroom vroom sounds and he makes sounds sticking out his tongue and blowing raspberries - pretty close.  He will play like that for awhile.  Or he will sit for 30 mins studying a book with different colors and textures.  Its interesting to see that he will sit and focus on something when Thing 2 will just bounce from toy to toy.  Just goes to show - yet again that even though they have the exact same genes they are very different!

All Done!

Right before we left on vacation we had started to ween the boys off of their bottles and get them to start using their sippy cups more.  Well, when we got to our room we discovered that I didn't pack any of the rings that screw on to the tops of the bottles.  I couldn't believe it!  I had my lists, and I checked them all off, but somehow I missed the rings for the bottles, so our plan to ween them got very accelerated.  It was a little rough since we had them off of all the bottles except for that first one in the morning.  When they wake up, they are STARVING and are not shy about letting you know it.  So we would give them a bottle to just hold them over until we were ready to give them breakfast.  Mornings in our house are a little crazy and it just made it easier if we could get them to wait.  Well being on vacation - we had to go cold turkey.  Now normally I would have been all for going to the store and buying some more, but since we are at the end of the bottle stage I just couldn't bring myself to go buy more when we were so close to the end.  what we had to start doing was leaving them in their cribs until we had their breakfast ready, cuz oh man you were in for a world of hurt if you brought them out and there was no food to be had straight away!  Pure meltdown - we are talking defcon 10.  But it is over and done with and now we are all weened off the bottles.

Thing 1 had a harder time with it than Thing 2, which was a little surprising to me.  Thing 2 loved him some bottles.  Just the sight of one would have him clinging to your leg and whining and pointing and it would escalate from there if he didn't get one.  Oh man - if you happen to be unloading the dishwasher and he saw it you were toast!  But apparently it was just a vessel to him.  He just wanted the milk.  You give him the milk in a sippy cup now and he's just fine.  Thing 1 would have nothing to do with it.  We even tried to heat it up, he just wanted his bottle.  He would take water out of the cup, but not milk.  It was very strange.  But towards the end of the week, he just turned a corner and started drinking the milk and even asking for it with sign language.

Again - twins - not always doing what you think they are going to do.  :)

We're on a boat!

So while The Girlchick was in Cali, we went to lake conroe.  I really thought that staying close to home would be easier.  But I found that if you have the opportunity to take more stuff and are not limited by space, you take everything you might possibly need.  Which is just WAY to much stuff!  We had coolers, toys, the large double stroller, clothes, diapers, the large double pack 'n' play, water toys, all the stuff for the pool and the lake.  Man it was a lot of stuff.  I think we took more stuff to Conroe then we did to mexico.  Geesh!

We were able to make it to the pool one day and the boys were not huge fans for their first foray into the pool. They eventually released their death grips on us and we were able to put them into the floaties, but they were still pretty unsure about the whole thing.

We also took them out on the lake in a pontoon boat.  They had a lot of fun.  but towards the end they were pretty tired and ready to go.  Not a huge fan of the life vests that they had to wear, and if I had to do it over I would make sure that they had better ones for little ones to wear that might have been a little more comfy.  But we all got to have lunch on the boat, but again it is a lot of work and at times very stressful.  You have one person trying to drive the boat and one person left to deal with both boys on a boat which isn't baby proof in any way.

I also forgot rule number one when you go on vacation with babies - bring the duct tape.  It can cover light sockets, secure cabinets/drawers closed, it can help in a lot of ways to baby proof a room temporarily.  I'm not sure why I seem to forget a lot of stuff I used to know and do and live by from when The Girlchick was a baby.  Oh yeah I remember - it's called TWINS!

Back From Vacation

We took a little mini vacation.  We are finally back and getting back into our routine and catching up on all the stuff, like going to the store, laundry..... etc.

The Girlchick got to go with grandma to California.  They went to Great Grandma's house, Disneyland, Malibu, Bates Beach, Silver strand, just to name a few.  They had a blast.  It was the first time that she has been out of state without us and away from us, except for spending the night at grandma's house.

She was so excited to go on the plane to California and get the window seat.  I get really airsick, and to help me manage that I sit in the window seat so I can have a focus point that isn't moving.  Which means she never gets to sit by the window and look out.  That was all she kept talking about leading up to the trip.
